Well, as an example, I said I don't have an opinion either way on reincarnation. Judaism is neutral on the subject; some sages think reincarnation happens, others don't. Most Christians reject it. Me, I don't have an opinion, nor do I see it as my place to predict. If God wants us to live more than once, we will.
I'm a curious blend of more-liberal and less-liberal than many. I personally adhere to a lot of moral standards that a lot of people think are stupid or irrelevant; on the other hand, I am much less willing to condemn *others* than most Christians are. The world is full of people who would call me a liberal, but would think nothing of just walking home with a ream of paper from the office, because it's "just overhead" and "paper is cheap". (Amusingly, I actually have a moderately expensive computer sitting around from a former employer, because they weren't sure whether or not they cared whether they got it back, but I have to get it back to them this week.)

See me / And if my face becomes sincere / Beware
Hold me / And when I start to come undone / Stich me together
Save me / And when you see me strut / Remind me of what left this outlaw torn

Hmm. Well, for one thing, I'm pretty commited to the "one God" concept. I'm a lot less liberal on sex than most UU's. I don't really feel it's my place to judge people who sleep around, but at the same time, I object to people who portray casual sex as "mentally healthier" than commitment; I think they are making a serious error in judgement, and most of them show no signs of having seriously thought through the issues.
Judaism fits me because of the tendency towards a less dogmatic view of what God is or wants, and the less specific teachings about the afterlife. I personally don't care much; I mean, obviously, I'd love to be happy forever, but I don't really understand the issue well enough to be sure that even *means* anything. It is enough for me that, here and now, I feel my life is constantly improving, and that God appears to approve of this. I don't really understand the afterlife thing, and I'll trust God to make it work out.
The big barrier for me with Judaism is the whole Jesus thing. On sheer evidence, I'm mostly agnostic, but God seems to have led me to believe that Jesus was divine, and I trust Him on that kind of thing.

It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can't build my hopes on a foundation of confusion, misery and death. And yet I think this cruelty will end, and that peace and tranquillity will return again.

seebs, we are going to be renewed, but not reincarnated. Is there something in the bible that alludes to this?

Bahai... I've heard of it. I think it's basically a cult, based on Christianity. I think. That's what I vaguely remember....
|
It's not a cult based on Christianity, it's a religion that rose from Islam.
